View from nearby ridge top.
Rock Basin Guest Homes occupies its own small corner of the Las Pilitas Valley in the upper Salinas River watershed. Santa Margarita Lake is literally one ridge over from the Valley and on quiet mornings you can hear the distant sound of the boats trolling the waters for large and small mouth bass. The Salinas River is an easy 1 mile stroll from Rock Basin and the historic old green bridge is now a picturesque foot bridge spanning a beaver pond below. Fish, frogs and turtles can be observed in their natural habitat from the old bridge roadway. Rocks with grinding holes used by the Salinan Indians can be seen along the riverbanks.
Las Pilitas Road is 7.5 miles long and runs in an east/west direction between W. Pozo Road and Parkhill Road. Rock Basin Guest Homes is almost in the middle, being three miles east of W. Pozo Road. The town of Santa Margarita is 8 miles away. Gasoline and basic grocery supplies are available in Santa Margarita and the town offers three cafes, a dinner dining house, a post office, a liquor store, a consignment/trading post and several antique shops. The Santa Margarita Town Park has picnic facilities with a pit BBQ, tables & benches and two horseshoe pits. The Park is a popular meeting place in the summer months and the site of monthly potlucks and summer family movies.
Pozo Valley Vineyards & Ancient Peaks Winery, both in Santa Margarita, offers samples of their vintages. Be sure to get your complimentary tasting card for Ancient Peaks from "B." before you stop by their tasting room. And for beer drinkers, Dunbar Brewery, tucked behind Ancient Peaks is a great place to beat the heat with a cold, fresh brewed lager, ale or stout.
